Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, along with incoming Police Chief Darnell Henry, and members of the Newark Municipal Council broadcasted Newark's 45-Day Plan to reduce crime and violence in a major news conference yesterday. The name is "Operation Forge Ahead," and the 45-day nine-point plan to reduce crime and violence in Newark by creating collaboration between police and residents.
Carey Gabay, a lawyer, was part of Governor Andrew Cuomo's administration at the Empire State Development Corporation. During a cultural celebration in Brooklyn, on September 7, 2015, Carey was shot in the head after seeking cover from two rival gangs in a shootout. Carey died nine days later after being taken off of a respirator. As a result, of Carey's death, a fundraising page was created to raise funds for SUNY colleges, disadvantaged students.
Mayor Ras J. Barak announced yesterday that he intends to appoint a civil to direct the Newark Police Department's Internal Affairs Division. This bold move to appoint a civilian will fill a traditional position otherwise by a sworn officer, to strengthen law enforcement in Newark and improve the relationship between the police and the communities. This change will take affect both within the internal operations and external relations of the department.
